In a remarkable achievement, Morgan Sindall has emerged as the top performer in the Construction News annual contractor league table for 2023. The company has impressively secured 330 contracts, amounting to a staggering £2.45 billion in value, showcasing its robust position in the UK construction sector.

Balfour Beatty, another industry giant, secured the second spot by obtaining 56 contracts valued at £2.1 billion. Not far behind, Wates and Galliford Try clinched third and fourth positions, with deals worth £1.75 billion and £1.66 billion, respectively.

December 2023 saw a significant win for Bouygues, who bagged a £1.34 billion tunnelling contract for the Lower Thames Crossing with Murphy. This achievement propelled Bouygues to the forefront in December, with a total contract value of £679.9 million. Amongst their projects is an ambitious 2.6-mile tunnel under the River Thames, linking Essex and Kent, and a mixed-use development in Didsbury, Greater Manchester, consisting of 76 flats and a medical centre for Southwark Housing Trust.

The league table for January-December 2023 shows Bouygues UK leading with two contracts worth £679.9 million, followed by Murphy with a £670 million share in the Thames Lower Crossing project, which is set to be the UK's longest and one of Europe's widest tunnels. Other notable contractors in the top ten include ISG, Winvic, Wates, Gilbert Ash, Royal Bam, JJ Rhatigan, and VolkerWessels.

ISG secured third place in December with three contracts totaling £217.6 million, including the £200 million second phase of the Slough One Data Campus. Morgan Sindall and Winvic also made significant gains, with projects worth £161.5 million and £105.7 million, respectively.

The construction industry saw several other major deals, including Winvic's £81 million Sweet Street build-to-rent scheme in Leeds and VolkerWessels' £78 million industrial scheme in Hemel Hempstead for Prologis. Excalon also embarked on a £78 million carbon capture project in Peterlee, County Durham.

Throughout 2023, Bouygues topped the monthly contractor league table three times, with significant wins in the healthcare and student accommodation sectors. Wates also led three times, thanks to major prison contracts and residential projects. Other league winners included Skanska, Multiplex, Bam, Galliford Try, Bowmer & Kirkland, and Balfour Beatty.
